Funeral services for Laurence R. Sorenson, 104, will be 10:00am, Saturday, January 16, 2010, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Laurence was born on October 22, 1905, in Brookings, SD, the son of Carl E. and Claire (Warner) Sorenson. He received his education in the Brookings Public Schools in Brookings, SD, and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1923. He attended SDSU for a short time. He was then employed as a commercial fisherman for a short time and later for the fisheries division of the South Dakota Fish Game and Parks. He was united in marriage to Signe Skovly on August 5, 1935, at Elk Point, SD. He was then employed by the Brookings Municipal Power Plant for 20 years and the South Dakota State University Power Plant for 20 years. He retired in 1971. Signe died on July 13, 1989, in Sioux Falls, SD.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Brookings Fire Department for 34 years, and the BPOElks for over 50 years. He was also a past member of the South Dakota Trappers Association, the National Rifle Association and was life member of the National Trappers Association.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son LeRoy Sorenson (and special friend Donna Bohlmann) of Tyndall, SD; three grandchildren Eric (Tracy) Sorenson of Alpharetta, GA, Amy McKenna of San Diego, CA, Peter (Lorrraine) Sorenson of Tabor, SD; seven great grandchildren Scott, Andrew, Brian, Megan, Austin, Ethan and Claire; and two great-great grandchildren Tanner and Taylor.

Laurence was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one granddaughter Lori Kloucek , one great grandson Christian Sorenson and one sister Naida Beneke. Laurence died on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall, SD.
